News Story Summary:
Hundreds of locals are facing a decade-long wait for a place to call their own.
The NSW Government is increasing the number of homes for vulnerable people in Port Macquarie, investing close to $6 million on two redevelopments for those in need.
One project will see the redevelopment of 12 sites on Gordon Street, while on the corner of Gore and Edwards streets, work is already underway to convert four ageing properties into 16 new and accessible social homes.
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said both redevelopments will benefit locals and the economy, providing an increase in the amount of social homes while creating jobs.
“At the corner of Gore and Edwards streets, local workers are building on the shared vision of creating safe and comfortable homes for our most vulnerable citizens,” Mrs Williams said.
At Gordon Street, the NSW Land and Housing Corporation (LAHC) has launched a registration of interest (ROI) for builders, developers and community housing providers (CHPs) to put forward proposals to redevelop 12 LAHC-owned sites.
“We’re committed to ensuring this $5.8 million project boosts Port Macquarie’s economy. Even at this early stage of construction, a local earth worker, concreter and bricklayer have been hired and there will be opportunities for apprentices too,” Mrs Williams said.
“Together with projects at locations such as South Kempsey, Tweed and Wauchope, we’re planning or constructing more than 300 social homes across northern NSW, which have a potential construction value of around $90 million and are expected to create 368 jobs,” Mrs Pavey said.
“Through collaboration we are getting results, and that is why we are launching this ROI, because to meet the increasing demand for social housing we are going to need all levels of government and industry to work in partnership.”
