The reality of having to pack up everything you own to relocate can be daunting, and without proper planning, the day of the move can become very stressful and frantic! Renowned for making jobs easy, the equipment experts at Kennards Hire Port Macquarie have put together a couple of top tips to help you prep and plan for your big move.
Don't face it alone
The saying 'many hands make light work' is definitely accurate when it comes to moving from one place to another. So why not make a day out of it and gather up a group of friends to help you out? Create a playlist to have some killer tunes in the background while you're hard at work, an esky filled to the brim with thirst quenchers and some snacks to nibble on throughout the day - you'll have a blast together and a couple of laughs as the day goes by. And when all the hard work is done, celebrate with some pizzas and beers at the end of the day as a 'thank you' to your mates!
Use what you've got
To transport household items make use of the things you already own like suitcases, duffel bags and laundry baskets. While you may not use your suitcases as often as you'd like, they definitely come in handy when moving. Pack any heavy items in these as the handles and wheels will make for easy transportation. For dishware and other breakables, use blankets, pillow cases, towels or clothing to wrap your fragile belongings before putting them into boxes, which you can also pick up at
Purge as you pack
Don't wait until the day of the move to get rid of all the things you don't plan on taking to the new place. While you're packing, create four piles: keep, donate, sell and throw - this way you'll be able to have a clear idea of what needs to be packed and what needs to be gone before moving day.
If you're downsizing to a smaller property and have a lot of furniture or bulky items to get rid of, organise a skip bin or council pick up to make your life a little easier, and to make an extra buck, put up some listings on the Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or even host a garage sale a week before the move.
Charities are also often in need of good quality second hand clothing and furniture, so be sure to check out community groups in your local area before deciding to throw away your belongings.
Have the right gear for the job
Create a list of equipment you'll need for the big move. Whether it's a ute, van, truck, trailer, trolley or even removalist blankets, Kennards Hire has it all! If you're just looking to attach a trailer to your vehicle, a caged trailer is ideal for larger items such as fridges and an enclosed trailer offers better protection from the elements, plus it's locakable if your items are to be left overnight.
While you may not need a trailer if you've decided to book a ute, van or truck, trolleys are a must-have, and Kennards Hire have a great range available. As stairs can present quite the challenge when moving items, a six-wheeled hand trolley lets you manually transport objects up and down stairs easily and efficiently.
Organisation is key
You'll be surprised by how much being organised helps make the transition of moving into a new place much easier. By simply labelling or colour coding boxes with the room they belong in, you'll be able to start unpacking straight away instead of moving boxes again. Since it may take weeks or even months to settle into your new place, give each box a rating based on the priority it needs to be unpacked in.
And to save you from rummaging around, pack a box with all the essentials needed on your first night - think light bulbs, chargers, bed sheets, toiletries, towels, toilet paper and shampoo - so you can freshen up and hit the sack after a long day of moving.
As overwhelming and tedious as moving house can be, if you plan ahead, stay organised and have many helping hands, the process will be somewhat stress-free. But when in doubt, pop into your local Kennards Hire, as the team have got what it takes to help you prep for your big move; they'll be able to give advice on what you need and equip you with the right gear for the job!
