As from today, Airport guests arriving at Port Macquarie Airport will enjoy the benefits of an expanded departure lounge that doubles the previous seating capacity, plus a new café, passenger-screening, accessible amenities and dedicated car rentals areas.
The first stage of works has also included the installation of ducted air conditioning throughout the terminal, Wi-Fi connectivity and the installation of improved flight information displays.
Mayor Peta Pinson said that as a result of the terminal upgrade, local residents and visitors to our region can now expect a more enjoyable airport experience.
“We are a rapidly growing community, and by providing airport facilities that rival the best in regional Australia, we are well placed to increase our popularity as a tourist destination of choice,” said Ms Pinson.
“This partnership with both the State and Federal Governments is paying real dividends for our community, and we look forward to delivering the remainder of the terminal upgrade works by the end of this year.”
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said first impressions are lasting and to see Stage One of the airport upgrade completed and open is an excellent outcome for the travelling public.
“This continues the Liberal and Nationals commitment to fund vital infrastructure for regional communities by injecting millions of dollars into key projects including in the Port MacquarieHastings,” Mrs Williams said.
Federal Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan said this is fantastic for the residents of Port Macquarie and Mid North Coast whether or not they are seasoned travellers.
“The new modern facilities will enhance the travel experience as well as encourage further tourism to our beautiful area,” said Mr Conaghan.
Stage 2 of the upgrade includes the construction of an expanded passenger check-in area and new baggage claim carousel, resulting in a complete transformation of the terminal building to one that is twice the size of the previous building. There will continue to be some temporary arrangements in place through to the end of this year to allow for Stage 2 works to be completed.
The upgrade to the terminal building is a $9.875 million project funded through a $5 million contribution from the NSW Government under the Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund and $1.25 million from the Australian Government. Council will contribute up to $3.625 million to the project
