The electric drive, 1-speed gearbox and battery system are based on volkswagen’s compact, all-electric car, e-up!.

The conversion uses new parts from the series production of volkswagen group components, and is being carried out by specialist company and partner in the project, eClassics. the e-beetle’s premiere is celebrated with a near-production version at the international motor show in frankfurt, germany in september 2019.

‘The electrified beetle combines the charm of our classic car with the mobility of the future,’ explains thomas schmall, member of the board of management of volkswagen group components.

‘Innovative e-components from volkswagen group components are under the bonnet –- we work with them to electrify historically important vehicles, in what is an emotional process. we are also providing beetle owners with a professional conversion solution, using production parts of the highest quality.’

The conversion is provided by production parts from the volkswagen e-up!. the e-beetle reaches performance peaks of 60°kW /82°PS, while the battery system — built into the underbody — comprises up to 14 modules, each with a capacity of 2.6 kWh.

Meanwhile, the lithium-ion battery modules cumulatively deliver energy of up to 36.8 kWh. the higher performance and increased weight — due to the extent of electrification — require the adaptation and reinforcement of both the chassis and brakes.

Despite weighing in at 1,280 kg, the e-beetle accelerates to 50 km/h in just under four seconds, to 80 km in a bit more than eight seconds, and reaches total top speeds of up to 150 km/h.

The range of the e-beetle is 200 km — a comfortable distance. in the case that the vehicle runs out of electricity mid-trip, built-in components allow for quick charging via a combined charging system. the e-beetle can then store enough energy for a journey of over 150 km after charging for around an hour.

Based on the e-beetle concept, the possibilities for the electrification of other historic vehicles becomes an open playing field. ‘we are already working together to prepare the platform for the bus,’ continued schmall. ‘an e-porsche 356 could also be pursued in the future’.
