Located in the Hollywood Hills above Los Angeles, California, the house has been frequently used as a set location in American films.

Photographic and anecdotal evidence suggests that the architect's client, Buck Stahl, may have provided an inspiration for the overall structure.

Built in 1959 as part of the landmark 'Case Study Houses Program', the house is considered to be the  iconic representation of modern architecture in Los Angeles during the twentieth century.

The information in this video comes from the books mentioned at the end of the movie, mainly:

'The birth of cool' which provides a rich description of the period in music, movies, lifestyle and so on and 'The complete case study program' which offers an in depth description of its houses.

When I saw this picture, I instantly recalled a movie that it was used in.  Columbo's 1968 "Prescription Murder". The end scene is tops, with a shot of the pool, ect. How on earth did I remember this???? That's how cool this home is!!

I originally train as an architect in the UK & I'm a die-hard 'Modernist'. I can't believe that i'm admitting this, but I've spent a lot of time in LA - but never got around to visiting this icon of modernism.

I will have to purge the guilt next time i'm there !!

P.S If you're heading for LA after lockdown ends, you've got to hire a car !
