Leslie Williams MP 'Prepare your bushfire survival plan now'
Prepare your bushfire survival plan, don’t drive through floodwater, swim between the flags, and make sure your home is fire safe this summer – 5 safety tips from NSW emergency services.

News Story Summary:

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said summer is a particularly busy time of year for all emergency services and everyone is urged to put safety first.

“Our community is well protected by our emergency services, but we can assist them by taking the time to get prepared.”

“Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility, whether you’re at home, at work or away on holidays,” Mrs Williams said.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliott joined emergency services leaders on Sydney Harbour to issue the timely reminder, as people begin decorating their homes for Christmas, planning holidays in regional NSW and enjoying warm days by the water.

“Aussie summers are iconic, but they can also be tragic. Last year, we had a horror bushfire season. This year, we’re expecting a wet and wild summer. But bushfires and storms are not the only threats we face,” Mr Elliott said.

“I urge you to use the start of summer as a start of a conversation with your friends and families about being prepared for seasonal hazards. Especially this year, as experts warn of a La Niña summer.”

How will you and your family get to a safe place? You could be separated from each other. How will you contact each other?

Think about how you will protect your pets, important documents and valuable personal items.

The emergency service agencies have designed many plans to help you Get Ready for specific hazards like fire and flood.

Prepare an emergency kit.

Plan how you will escape a fire in your home and practice it with your family.

3. Get your home ready

Prepare your home by doing general home maintenance and checking your insurance.

Trim overhanging trees and branches and remove dead and dry vegetation from around the house. Clean out gutters and downpipes. Secure or put away loose items in your yard or balcony. Check the roof is in good repair.

Do a home safety check and make sure your smoke alarms are working. And make sure that your home and contents insurance is up-to-date.

4. Be aware
