News Story Summary:

Here's what the worls press had to say about our 'One-In-A-Hundred-Year' flood event:

Euronews:

Hundreds rescued as severe floods hit Sydney and the New South Wales coast

Australia's most populous state of New South Wales (NSW) on Sunday issued more evacuation orders following the worst flooding in decades.

The NSW State Emergency Services responded to 640 calls for help on Saturday night, including 66 for flood rescues.

A resident of Taree, some 300 km (185 miles) north of Sydney, said heavy rains had hit overnight.

"When we went to bed last night this was all green paddock and when we woke up this morning we had a lake," said Shane Bridger.

The Warragamba dam, west of Sydney, started overflowing on Sunday and so far, 13 evacuation centers have been opened across the state. More evacuations are expected as the bad weather is forecast to last into the middle of the week.

CNN:

The Australian government has declared a natural disaster in large swaths of New South Wales (NSW) as heavy rains batter the state and force thousands to evacuate.

Rains have been inundating communities since Thursday, but parts of the east coast tipped into crisis on Saturday as a major dam overflowed, adding to swollen rivers and causing flash flooding.

Joshua Edge and his fiancée Sarah Soars lost the house they were renting Saturday on what was supposed to be their wedding day.

They lost everything they owned, including pets, as flood waters powered through Mondrook, an area near the town of Taree in NSW, Edge's brother Lyle wrote on a GoFundMe page set up to help the couple.

The page has raised nearly $100,000 AUD (roughly $77,000 USD) from 1,779 people in one day. A video circulating on social media shows a house being carried by floods in the same area, but CNN could not independently verify whether it was the one Edge and Soars had been living in.

"We have just been blown away with people's generosity," said Lyle Edge in a Facebook post. "We are all so grateful and can not [sic] thank everyone enough."

BBC

About 18,000 Australians have been evacuated from flooding across New South Wales (NSW) as heavy rain continues to batter the east coast.

Emergency services have conducted at least 500 rescues, including winching people from cars. One stranded family was lifted from their flooded home by a helicopter.

The flooding has caused havoc across NSW, forcing 15,000 evacuations on the state's Mid-North Coast and a further 3,000 in Sydney, officials said.

There have also been warnings from meteorologists that two weather systems could collide on Monday night, creating a "last blast" of rain and storms that could last until Wednesday or Thursday.

South China Morning Post:

Thousands evacuated, schools shut as fresh rains worsen.

The days-long deluge has inundated coastal areas of New South Wales and eight million residents were told to avoid unnecessary travel.

In Sydney, swollen rivers were expected to peak at levels not seen since 1961 after the Warragamba Dam spilled over last week

The state’s Mid North Coast has been particularly badly affected, with Berejiklian declaring the region had been struck by a “one in 100 year” disaster.

Rainfall records were forecast to continue tumbling in the coming days as the deluge spreads into the state’s northwest, and further north into Queensland state where flood warnings were also issued.

Health officials have said the rain and floods will delay the already halting roll-out of coronavirus vaccines in Sydney and surrounding areas.

China Daily:

Heavy rains along Australia's east coast over the weekend have brought the worst flooding in half a century in some areas, authorities said on Sunday, forcing thousands to evacuate and damaging hundreds of houses.

Authorities urged residents to heed the "dozens" of official warnings in place across affected areas, with State Emergency Service assistant commissioner Dean Storey saying those in evacuation zones "must leave immediately".

People had already begun flocking to evacuation centers in towns north of Sydney on Saturday as torrential rains pummeled a vast coastal region already soaked by an unusually wet summer.

In Taree, about 150 people slept overnight in a local auditorium that has previously been a refuge for people fleeing bush fires.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the wild weather was forecast to re-intensify north of Sydney on Monday before easing later in the week.

So - There you have it - fame again !!
