Billy Idol 'Rebel Yell'
Billy Idol named this tune after the Rebel Yell brand of bourbon whiskey. Billy explained that he was at a gig where Mick & Keith of the Stones were downing Rebel Yell shots straight from a bottle.

That event gave Billy the idea for the title, and he wrote the song around it.

The track was recorded in only three days at the Electric Lady Studios in New York City.

Idol was battling Chrysalis Records at the time over creative control and decided to steal the master tapes.

Keith Forsey stated in an interview later that Idol had in fact stolen the wrong tapes.

Nevertheless, Idol won the battle with the label and returned to the studio victorious.

Idol wrote this song with his guitarist, Steve Stevens, who came up with some unique sounds on the track.

The ray-gun effect on the solo he created using a Lexicon PCM 41 digital delay processor, but he later figured out a way to get a more distinctive sound using an actual ray-gun.

By tweaking a toy ray-gun, he was able to hold it to his pickups and generate these strange sounds. His "Ray gun guitar" became one of the most popular spots of a Billy Idol concert.

The video was directed by Jeff Stein, whose previous work included The Who documentary The Kids Are Alright.

The video was shot at the Capitol Theater in New Jersey with the audience made up of kids they bussed in from New York City.

Sounds of the crowd cheering and singing along were added to the video version of the song, which captured the live energy of this anthemic song.

The clip was a huge hit on MTV, but it almost missed its premiere slot - Stein says MTV made them edit out a shot of a kid holding a beer, and the edited tape made it to the network just minutes before air.

Can we appreciate the fact that no one really expected him to survive the 80's and here he is still rocking his concerts? How's that for epic?

Steve Stevens has to be one of the most underappreciated and underrated guitarists in rock music. Dude is no fucking slouch. And a fucking guitar legend and god.

Still listening to this song, after 37 years, yet I enjoy it as much as in those old days when I was just an early teen. Incredible tune ! When one lived for the music and the music lived for us.

This came on my car radio when I was 10 seconds from home, so I had to continue driving around for another 4 minutes and 42 seconds.

I first heard this song when I lived on Cape Cod. I was a Rebel from Texas. Billy Idol was a genius in pure, raw sex. He used his entire body, including his voice, as his instrument. He was flawless. I still love him. Rock on, Sweet Idol.
