'Wandi the dingo' returns home after falling from the sky
It was an emotional reunion for Jane Guiney who found 'Wandi the dingo' pup whining in her yard after it is suspected he fell from the sky after escaping the clutches of an eagle.

News Story Summary:

Two years after 'Wandi the dingo' fell from the sky and landed in a north-east Victorian backyard, he has returned to his home.

Jane Guiney (Above) scooped Wandi up and cared for him in those early stages before DNA tests confirmed he was a purebred Alpine Dingo, one of the rarest of their kind.

"It was an amazing feeling, just looking at the mountains and knowing that this is his home," she said.

When asked if she thought Wandi remembered her, a teary Ms Guiney answered "yes".

"The way he came up to me and was getting protection from my son Ed, who was with me when I found him. I'm hoping [he remembered me] anyway."

The reunion was made possible by Wandiligong Primary School whose students have been writing letters to Wandi ever since learning of his story.

An ambassador for the species:

Wandi has spent the last few years attaining global stardom at the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre, where he met his life partner, Hermione.

The pair gave birth to their first litter of pups this year, two of which the sanctuary have kept.

Sanctuary supervisor Kevin Newman, who is also Wandi's manager, said he has been a fantastic ambassador for the species.

"For many years we were told that there were no pure dingoes left in Victoria and a lot of scientists believe that," he said.

"Even us as a sanctuary had that thought too, until Wandi literally fell from the sky and proved everyone wrong.

"These are an endangered species. They are threatened in Victoria ... they need our help and they need our protection."

Mr Newman said there is insufficient data, but it is estimated only 600-800 dingoes are left in the wild in Victoria, with two main populations in the Mallee and the Alpine region.

"They are a threatened protected species in Victoria but there's an order in council that sits on top of it saying they're unprotected if they're on private property or within 3 kilometres of private property," Mr Newman said.

"We'd love for that to be changed."

The use of meat baits, which are laced with a poison known as 1080, across the country is also having an impact on species numbers.

Dingoes have become victims of the common poison, which is used to protect agricultural production and native flora and fauna from the impacts of pest animals.

"There was just a recent Victorian ecosystem decline inquiry and one of the recommendations is to phase out the use of 1080 and also look at reintroducing dingoes back into the wild," Mr Newman said.

The misconception that dingoes are wild dogs plays a role in their declining numbers, but Wandi has sparked interest around the world and people are now eager to learn more about the animal.

There have been four dingo pups found around the Alpine area since Wandi crash-landed in the town, filling the community with hope for the species.
