Budjerah 'What Should I Do'
Aboriginal artist Budjerah’s soaring vocals are paired with synth-filled production on 'What Should I Do?', a superb funk-soul track that’s as smooth & groovy as it is emotional - dig it if you can!
Australia’s rising star of soul Budjerah has just released his new single, What Should I Do?, and it’s the funkiest moment in his discography to date.
Budjerah Slabb (born 2004), known mononymously as Budjerah, is an Aboriginal Australian singer-songwriter from Fingal Head, New South Wales.
He is a Coodjinburra man from the Bundjalung nation.
His debut single "Missing You" was released in October 2020.
Teaming up with producer Konstantin Kersting,'What should I do?' sees Budjerah grappling with the feeling of being ignored by his so-called friends.
Budjerah’s soaring vocals are paired with synth-filled production on 'What Should I Do?', resulting in a track that’s as groovy as it is emotional.
If you’ve ever been in a position where you’ve felt like you’ve been cast aside, then you’ll find yourself belting this one out at the top of your lungs.
Speaking about the meaning of What Should I Do?, Budjerah explains, “The lyrics for What Should I Do? came really easily. The inspiration came a few weeks earlier – I noticed that my friends weren’t really texting me or calling me; they had sort of pushed me to the side. I was sad because I didn’t have any friends, and didn’t know what to do. But now it’s over: I got some new friends.”
The video builds on the themes of the song, with Budjerah teaming up with Mick Soiza (who directed the video for Higher) once again.
Throughout the clip, we see Budjerah searching for a genuine connection – he’s present in the room, but he doesn’t feel included.
Speaking about the video, Mick explains, “Apart from the track being a soulful undercover dance floor banger, I feel this song captures a lot of the social anxiety and disconnection so many people feel but are too afraid or embarrassed to voice.
