News Story Summary:

Houston Mitchell Drive between Bonny Hills and the Pacific Highway is to receive a major upgrade that will complete safety and traffic flow improvements along this vital link road.

The program of works will involve two sections of Houston Mitchell Drive; between Long Point Drive and the Pacific Highway, and a 2.5km stretch west of Forest Parkway.

These two sections will complete the upgrade to the entire length of the road, and works will occur concurrently to allow for completion in the most timely, efficient and cost effective manner possible

A Bonny Hills resident had previously voiced his concerns about a lack of action to address the dangerous intersection at Houston Mitchell Drive and the Pacific Highway.

Peter Rodgers regularly travels along Houston Mitchell Drive and said there have been many accidents fhere, due to the nature of the intersection.

Mr Rodgers is calling for the speed limit to be reduced further on the section of highway leading from Port Macquarie to the intersection.

"This intersection carries a significant amount of traffic & not only lacks a slip lane for traffic turning south onto the highway, but also traffic turning north has to cross the highway where vehicles are travelling in the opposite direction at 110 km/h," he said.

"The danger is exacerbated when vehicles travelling south enter the turning lane into Houston Mitchell Drive and obscure the view to the north."

"Until this intersection is made safer by the construction of a slip lane and overpass, the speed limit must be reduced to 90km/h or less in order to prevent serious injury and loss of life."
