Port Macquarie reopens, Forster & Taree snap lockdown
MidCoast & Kempsey LGA's on high alert as Port Macquarie exits lockdown but Taree & Forster-Tuncurry residents have spent their first day back in lockdown after snap stay-at-home orders were issued.

News Story Summary:

There is concern about the spread of COVID-19 in Forster and Taree on the NSW Mid North Coast after positive cases were identified within the Indigenous community.

Stay-at-home orders came into effect at midnight for postcodes 2430 and 2428 which include Taree and Forster-Tuncurry until October 11.

Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said the cases in the MidCoast council area — a positive case from Sydney and two community transmissions — are of concern.

"They're within the Aboriginal community of Taree and Forster which can be health-wise a vulnerable community and because of that, there is real concern from NSW Health.

"This is not like the three cases over at Gloucester, where [NSW] Health believed they could keep it under control — which is what they did.

"[NSW] Health is very concerned because the people have not been forthcoming, haven't been truthful and haven't been helpful. So we haven't been able to identify very many venues of concern."

Venues of concern include the Lakeside Tavern at Forster, Forster Bowling Club and several shops at the Stockland Forster Shopping Centre.

"But none of the venues in the Taree area have been identified because of the lack of assistance and people being forthcoming," Mr Bromhead said.

"We know that several houses in Purfleet were visited. We know that there were several houses in what we call the Bushland area in Taree were visited. We know that some houses in the Cabarita area of Forster were visited.

"So in this particular case ... [NSW] Health were adamant that we had to go into lockdown.

"Even though we're going to come out of the lockdown, people will still get COVID; and vulnerable people, it could be even worse for them.

"We're only at about 60% double-jab at this point in time, so Health are hoping that this lockdown until the 11th will help stop the transmission.

Mr Bromhead said the local Aboriginal Health Services — Tobwabba and Biripi — have been satisfied with the vaccination rollout and have been running clinics in both Forster and Taree.

"They're also very pleased with the way people are coming forward and the vaccination rate.

"Having said that, both have indicated that there are some households where there's hesitancy and Tobwabba were talking about potentially going to visit the people at their home and taking the vaccine to them in case the person there wanted to get vaccinated."
