Kate Bush 'Running Up That Hill'
Kate Bush proved that she was a true pop powerhouse when she released the lead single from her fifth album 'Hounds of Love' in 1985. In 2022, after 'Stranger Things' it hit #1 in the UK singles chart.
The first released single from that fifth was the ethereal yet catchy 'Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God)', a song which has only grown in popularity over the years.
Executive at her record label EMI were not too sure about releasing the song with its original title of 'A Deal with God', due to any potential negative religious reactions.
Kate relented and changed the title to just 'Running Up that Hill', but the album version of the song is listed as 'Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)'.
Kate Bush explained in 1985: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities.
"It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."
'Running Up that Hill' was Kate Bush's most successful 1980s single, entering the UK chart at number 9, and peaking at number 3.
It was also a hit in the US, reaching the top 30.
It returned to the charts in 2022 after being used several times in the latest season of Netflix drama Stranger Things.
Amazingly, the song climbed to number 1 in the UK singles chart following its newfound love.
This finally gave Kate her first number one single since 1978, making it the longest gap between number 1s ever.
Beautiful, Sublime, Timeless, Epic, Enjoy.

My 17 year old daughter has this on her playlist. Imagine how surprised she was when Granny showed her the original album.

Imagine releasing a song when you're 27 years old and it reaches number 1 when you're 63 years old

As a 72 year old man I'm tickled that 17 year olds are discovering Kate Bush. You like Kate? Try The Dreaming (1982). It's the most original and experimental album she ever made, and I suspect that's why it was overlooked at the time. On the basis of that record alone Kate's a genius. Every song on that album is formally audacious musically and lyrically like a compressed novel. When I first heard Sat In My Lap on the radio I was stunned. It sounded like a playful mashup of "Pop" music and avant-garde European art music! I had to find out where it came from and who made it. I discovered The Dreaming and Kate Bush. That was 40 years ago. I'm so glad Kate is finally getting the recognition she has always deserved.

I'm a millenial and I so happy that Stranger Things led me to this masterpiece. Kate Bush is truly a talented artist. I always stunned by the live performance of the older generations, soulful vocals with no special effects and live music.

She's certainly one of the most unique and creative women in the history of music and she wrote and produced every one of her songs unbelievable talent and the fact she was doing all that in the 1970s and 1980s is more impressive for me she's one of the great talents of the last 50 years

I heard this song when I was younger. When it was on the radio I never knew the lyrics and how powerful they actually are !!

The reason the song is resonating so well with todays generation via stranger things is simple, it’s an original song sung by a superb artist that never sounded like anything else in 1985 and that still applies in 2022. People just recognise brilliance
