News Story Summary:

William Tyrrell's foster mother pleads guilty to assaulting child at a Sydney home.

The child is not William.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared at Parramatta Local Court today, alongside her husband.

The 58-year-old pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault in relation to alleged incidents that took place in January and October 2021.

However, she entered not guilty pleas to two counts of stalking or intimidating the child.

Her 56-year-old husband maintained not guilty pleas to one count of common assault and one count of stalking or intimidating the child.

William Tyrrell's foster mother demands to see all evidence against her after police recommend charges

NSW detectives have recommended William's foster mother be charged for allegedly covering up the death of the toddler, who has been missing since September 2014.

In a statement provided to the ABC, the foster mother's lawyer said detectives failed to inform her or her client about the development before it became public last night.

Lawyer Sharon Ramsden said she had now sought confirmation from police that the brief had been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

"The foster mother and her legal representatives call for disclosure of the evidence which police suggest forms the basis of any criminal proceedings," the statement said.

"To date, William’s body has never been found. The foster mother has always, and maintains, she has nothing to do with William’s disappearance.

"She desperately urges the police to resume the investigation into finding out what happened to William."

Ms Ramsden urged the DPP to "Expeditiously determine" whether the foster mother would be charged.

Detectives from Strike Force Rosann — the team tasked with finding out what happened to the three-year-old— recently gave a brief of evidence to the DPP suggesting the foster mother be charged with offences relating to concealing his death.

The strike force does not believe she caused the toddler's death and the foster mother has not been told by authorities about the brief of evidence against her.

Now, police have decided to leave her case in the hands of prosecutors who will decide if it has any merit and whether the allegations should ever be tested before a court.

If the DPP decides there is not enough evidence to lay criminal charges William's case will go back to the Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame who is expected to hold more hearings in the coming months.

There is no suggestion that the foster mother was responsible for the death of William Tyrrell.

The police theory is that William died in an accident in the small town of Kendall on the NSW Mid North Coast in September 2014, and his foster mother, who cannot be identified, allegedly covered it up by hiding his body.

His body has never been found.

She has always denied any knowledge of what happened to William and neither she nor her lawyer were notified about the police brief handed to the DPP before it became public knowledge last night.

The foster mother became a person of interest back in 2021 after the Strike Force came under new leadership.

William disappeared from his foster grandmother's home near Port Macquarie on the Mid-north coast of NSW in 2014, aged three.

No one has ever been arrested or charged over his disappearance.
