Australia Post issues $1 coins featuring 'big things'
A limited run of collectable $1 coins featuring iconic tourist attractions across Australia has proven popular in one NSW coastal city, Coffs Harbour, north of Port Macquarie.

News Story Summary:

The Big Banana at Coffs Harbour on the state's mid north coast is among Australia's landmarks that have been in the special release today by Australia Post.

Australia Post's Coffs Harbour postmaster, Craig Felton said the coin featuring a design of the Big Banana had sold out in parts of the city due to strong demand from collectors.

"We've got our regular collectors, they've put their orders in early and we've allocated all of our coins to them so far," Mr Felton said.

"They're pretty scarce."

From Queensland's Big Pineapple and the Giant Koala in Victoria, Australia Post said the collectable coins aimed to celebrate iconic regional landmarks.

Mr Felton said he and the community were proud to see Coffs Harbour's Big Banana honoured in this way.

“They’re excited to have a local icon on a national coin — it’s been well received,” he said.

Mr Fenton hoped the publicity about the collectable currency would be "good for the town".

The Big Banana's sales manager Leah Holmes said the business was approached last year to have a design minted on Australian currency.

She said staff pushed to have botanical banana plants included in the design of the coin to pay tribute to the banana's significance in the history of the Coffs Coast.

"It was pretty important to us that we had the actual banana plant in there," Ms Holmes said.

"We still have a working plantation here, we have a huge connection to that historical part of Coffs Harbour,"

"It's part of our footprint now."

Ms Holmes said while the quirky and kitsch nature of tourist attractions like The Big Banana factor into their popularity, she also thinks that tourists are equally attracted by a sense of nostalgia and history contained in the sites.

"We have so many people that say: 'I came here as a kid, I want to recreate that photo with my parents'," Ms Holmes said.
