NSW and Victoria bushfires updates: To late to leave
New South Wales is facing "very dangerous" bushfire conditions today and Victorians have been warned conditions could be worse than they were on New Year's Eve.

The warnings come as two people were confirmed killed in bushfires that have ravaged large parts of Kangaroo Island, where homes have been lost and a blaze is still out of control.

Jindabyne preparing for the worst

Most of Sheena Perry’s neighbours in the town of Jindabyne are gone.

A number of fires are burning west of the town, and there is a risk embers will be blown through the Thredbo Valley towards Jindabyne.

Ms Perry has spent the morning wetting down her house and garden, and is doing her best for the neighbours who’ve left.

She’s filled every container she has with water, including the wheelie bins, and has mops at the ready to put out any spot fires.

Further down the street, there are fire hoses and fire extinguishers ready in case of trouble.

She is optimistic that the threat will pass, but hasn’t ruled out taking refuge in the lake if the worst happens.

A few houses in her street have pink tape tied to trees and letterboxes indicating the residents are there.

People have also put their names on a list so firefighters know who is still in the villages on the far side of Lake Jindabyne, where any ember attack is most likely to hit.

Temperatures are now rising, and the wind is picking up.

Several emergency warnings for Victoria

VicEmergency advises:

Emergency Warning is being issued for Biggara, Tintaldra, Towong, Towong Upper, Walwa and surrounding communities.

The Murray Valley Highway is closed in both directions due to increased potential for impact from the fire.

Fire weather on today Saturday 4 January is predicted to be extreme creating fire storm conditions which may not be survivable.

A wind change is expected late this afternoon or early this evening, which will cause the fire to change direction towards the northeast. Conditions can become very dangerous and unpredictable.
