first air mail flight from Lismore to Tenterfield recreated Casino has celebrated 100 years since Australia’s first sanctioned air mail flight on Friday 26 June at Casino Aerodrome, with a Gipsy Moth plane flying mail from Lismore to Casino.
The first flight took place on Saturday June 26, 1920, when pilot Frank Roberts took off in an AVRO 540K plane from a cow paddock in Lismore, flying to Casino then Tenterfield.
The plane carried 8,000 letters which were then sent to Sydney from Tenterfield by train.
A re-creation of the Air Mail Flight will take place flying from Lismore to Casino and on to Tenterfield.
Casino residents had the opportunity to purchase a commemorative envelope at Casino Post Office for $1.35 and write a historic letter to a friend.
If that letter was posted by Wednesday 24 June and it will have be sent to its destination aboard the events 1920’s Gipsy Moth Plane.
Spectators at Casino where able to access the aerodrome grounds for a closer look at the plane.
Due to COVID-19, spectators where asked to remain in their vehicles whilst on the site.
