Pedro Ramalho combines sail and solar power for energy autonomous yacht concept
To achieve the right combination of solar and sail efficiency, Ramalho envisions the P1 as a transformable vessel.
With a retractable mast, keel, and rudder, it can turn from an energy-efficient, electric propulsion solar boat to a fully rigged sailing yacht.
This set-up aims to open new ways and possibilities for traveling around the globe.
With 60 sqm of photovoltaic panels, the boat can generate up to 15kW/P from the sun, powering an electric engine and charging batteries.
Ideally, this solar power could be used for port and coastal navigation.
As the sun is not a continuous energy source, limited to daylight hours and fair weather, the design also combines the technology of a sailing vessel.
Deploying a mainsail and jib in a fully automated process, the P1 can boost its range to reach all shores with the performance and sustainability of a traditional sailing yacht.
The retractable sailing rig functions as an articulated triangle with a sliding vertex – the sails unwind from a furling inside the masts.
