News Story Summary:
From the Revive Lake Cathie Facebook page:
"What's happening in Lake Cathie now the scraping of the berm has failed ? The result is that there are now 2 relatively distinct independent estuarine environments.
Cathie Lagoon (east of Kenwood Drive Bridge) has become more the traditional tidal estuary.
All water values in Cathie Lagoon now appear to be close to those of the ocean itself.
Cathie Lagoon Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels would be supportive of marine life and we expect to see more fish in this area as a result.
However, the two lakes and part of Cathie Creek, as measured by Revive Lake Cathie's NSW Waterwatch Team on Saturday, evidenced that these areas remain 'Highly saline, high in acids and sulphates, low in DO and other essential elements'.
It will take at least 80-100 tidal cycles for oceanic water to have even the mildest impact on Lake Innes.
Revive Lake Cathie Board Members Peter Fitzroy and President Danielle Maltman witnessed excessive Iron Flocc & surfactants flowing from Lake Innes into Lake Cathie, as such we expect another Iron Flocc event which will further poison and contaminate the Estuarine System
