News Story Summary:
Scott Morrison among small group to receive first coronavirus vaccines administered in Australia
The first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to a small group Australians ahead of a broader rollout tomorrow.
An 84-year-old World War II survivor was the first Australian to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
Jane Malysiak got the Pfizer shot at Sydney's Castle Hill Medical Centre as Prime Minister Scott Morrison watched on.
Mr Morrison described Ms Malysiak as a "great Australian".
"She came here from Europe when she was 13 and she's built an amazing life in this country. She's seen more things than most of us have," he said.
"And she's taking part in what is a very historic day for our country."
Mr Morrison described today's vaccinations as a "curtain-raiser" to the broader rollout starting tomorrow.
"We're here making some very important points, that it's safe, that it's important and we need to start with those who are most vulnerable and on the front line."
Mr Morrison, Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly and nine other Australians got the Pfizer shot this morning.
From tomorrow, aged care and disability care workers and residents, along with quarantine workers, will start receiving the jab.
More to come.
