Port Macquarie : Glasshouse reopens after weather event
Port Macquarie’s Glasshouse Gallery can finally welcome visitors, 6m's after a freak weather event destroyed the exhibition space. Two displays showcasing talent from around the state are now on.

News Story Summary:

Glasshouse Regional Gallery reopens in Port Macquarie after devastating weather event.

The Gallery's team worked diligently behind the scenes to assess the damage caused by the weather event & restore the gallery back to its original condition after the February 3rd storm.

Like many other homes and businesses in the Port Macquarie area, the Glasshouse Regional Gallery experienced significant damage during the February 3rd  weather event.\

While the building itself did not fail, hail and debris blocked our down pipes and drainage system, redirecting water into two of our offices and both levels of the gallery.

Fortunately, the damage to artworks was minimal thanks to the hard work of the gallery's staff and the building's engineering.

The Gallery exhibition space had to remain closed until the damage has been corrected.

The space has been drying out since 3 February, whilst we have been working with the insurance company, structural engineer and specialist contractors to formulate a plan to restore the space.

The Gallery is constructed to museum industry standards, including walls which can hang up to 250kg (per square metre) and a timber floor which can support up to 500kg (per square metre) in a climate-controlled environment.

This high construction specification enables the Gallery to attract exhibitions from national cultural institutions like The Australian War Memorial and National Gallery.

It was necessary to ensure that these repair works restore the Gallery to its original standard.

Unfortunately, the scheduled exhibition, Origin: The place where something begins - Sydney Printmakers, will not be displayed in our future programming.

Awakening by Elva Henderson, The Nature of Us by Dianne and Kim Greenwood and House and Home by Sue Bell, as these are featuring local artists, we hope to find a new time to display the work within our future programming.

While this has been a difficult time for the Gallery staff, we look forward to the future and the restoration of our gallery space.
