Mrs Pavey said 'The NSW Government committed $70,000 to install the lighting system to help improve safety in the two key River sections".

"The Macleay River bar is a major access point for local fishing and tourism vessels who will be guided by the new sector lights," Mrs Pavey said.

"Sector lights are visible from up to two nautical miles away, day and at night, with the red, white and green lights indicating the safest channel based on historical and recent survey data,"

"Boat skippers entering on either side of the channel will see the red or green light shine accordingly to direct them safely towards a centreline channel indicated by a white light," Mrs Pavey said.

Skippers are reminded to always exercise caution when crossing a bar, and understand their own capability and that of the boat, particularly during dangerous looking seas or rough weather.

"Part of the Liberals & Nationals Maritime Safety Plan 2017-21 target is to reduce the rate of fatalities and serious injuries on our waterways by 30% by 2021.

The sector light is the latest technology in navigation aids to enhance boat safety, ensuring we're on the right track to meet this target."
