Port Macquarie: Town Green West Foreshore facelift underway
Following the 2017 upgrade of Town Green East and the Westport Park walkway upgrade in 2018, work is commencing next week at Town Green West.

Jointly funded by the federal government and the Town Centre Masterplan Committee, the redevelopment will improve accessibility and connectivity.

This next stage of the upgrade includes the continuation of the 5-metre wide waterfront promenade with this wonderful shared path now continue from Lady Nelson Wharf through to Short Street and the boardwalk.

In addition, the foreshore rock wall will be upgraded, and the reserve area will be improved with increased seating and picnic tables to enjoy, and new grassed areas for relaxing and playing.

There will be bins and drinking fountains installed, and new LED lighting will improve security.

Council Director Dan Bylsma said that the improvements to the Port Macquarie foreshore and Town Square in recent years have been extremely popular with both locals and visitors.

"There wouldn’t be many of us who haven’t taken the opportunity to stroll along our beautiful foreshore, admired the wonderful views, enjoyed a picnic on the grass or attended one of the many community events on our Town Green and Square," said Mr Bylsma.

"This upgrade to Town Green West will see the continuation of the wonderful facilities along the foreshore, providing better connectivity and an even more vibrant, inclusive community space that is sure to also be a real drawcard for tourists."

Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan said he supported this project because it had been driven by a passionate band of committee members.

"I’d like to thank the Port Macquarie Town Centre Master Plan Committee who has driven this project to give locals and tourists better access to the beautiful Port Macquarie foreshore," he said.

"I made a commitment to advocate for funding for this project in 2019 and it’s great to see work starting there next week with a contribution of $1.5 million from the Morrison-McCormack Government."

The upgrade to Town Green West is a key deliverable in the Port Macquarie-Hastings Recreation Action Plan 2017-2025, Coastal Walk Master Plan and the Town Centre Master Plan 2013.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2020, subject to favourable weather.

In addition to the foreshore reserve works, a future upgrade of the Town Green Playground is in the planning stages, with construction planned to get underway in early 2021.

"The construction of a new playground will be another great improvement to our Town Green, and we’ll be engaging further with the community regarding the design later this year," added Mr Bylsma.

This is a $2 million project with $500,000 provided by the Town Centre Masterplan Committee (through contributions levied on commercial property owners within the Port Macquarie CBD) and $1.5 million from the Australian Government through a Community Development Grant.
